Book Review: The Enchanted Hat by Mary Sue

by M. J. Joachim

It was with a big sense of encouragement that I engaged in the reading of The Enchanted Hat by Mary Sue, and up until about 25% of the way into it, I wasn’t disappointed at all. That’s when the book decidedly fell apart, because it seems like the author didn’t feel the need to proofread and edit beyond this point.

The story itself was likable enough, framed in a rough outline sort of way. This was a story, not an outline, but you could picture the outline in the background if you tried. The intro was decent. The body was cute and repetitive. The conclusion was satisfactory and wrapped things up well enough.

I wasn’t thrilled with the language and rudeness, especially since this is a book for kids. As much as it is a style choice, I believe writers, like teachers, need to set the bar high and not encourage kids to talk like snotty little brats. Unfortunately, both kids and adults in this book talk with a rude edge toward each other.

I definitely believe the manuscript could be tightened up, eliminating a lot of the repetition. And you know how I feel about poor editing, something that truly caught me by surprise, because the first part of the book look pretty good. There are enough professionally self-published books out there, that you’re probably better off purchasing those instead.

Thanks so much for stopping by. Happy reading, writing and whatever else you do.
